Fifteen

“You are my candy girl!” I shouted out my open window.

The assembled zombies stopped banging on the glass and turned towards the new noise. The movement of the car was enough to get them to forget about my friends inside and follow me instead. I sped up a little, just enough to stay ahead of them.

I headed north on Eleventh Avenue at a pace not much faster than a brisk jog. In my rearview mirror I spotted the rest of the gang slinking out of the dealership’s front door. They took out a few stragglers, then followed behind the pack of zombies and me, hugging the buildings.

After two blocks I couldn’t see them anymore. The crowd of undead had grown too thick. The zombies ahead of me, so far, had been sparse enough that I had been able to either drive around them or nudge them aside, leaving them to join my followers.

I was going to turn right onto West Fifty-Eighth Street, intending to drive straight past the subway stop and clear as direct a route as possible, but there were too many abandoned cars blocking my way. I hadn’t considered traffic in a dead city, which was pretty shortsighted of me. When the plague was at its worst, New Yorkers probably weren’t too concerned about finding legal parking. New Yorkers weren’t too concerned about that even before the end of the world.

I headed straight and turned down West Fifty-Ninth instead. I had an absurd moment of hesitation when I saw the “No Right Turn” sign – West Fifty-Ninth was one-way in the opposite direction. I spotted the blue of a police officer in the crowd chasing me, but figured giving me a ticket was not going to be its top priority if it caught me.

I turned down Ninth Avenue to get back on Fifty-Eighth, and the way was clear all the way past the subway. I picked up a lot more zombies from my little detour. I was worried that those farthest back would lose interest and drop away, causing my friends difficulties, but it seemed like once the creatures joined a herd they were content to stay with it, even if they didn’t know what they were actually following. If all the cool zombies jumped off a bridge, they’d do the same.

I drove past the subway entrance. It was beneath an overhang under the Time Warner Center. I could see the top of the motionless escalator leading underground. A black sign on the silver wall read “59 St – Columbus Circle Subway Station.”

I decided that past the stop I’d turn left and make for Central Park, which was just across the circle. I’d drive the SUV up onto the curb at the park entrance, get as far as I could, then hop out and lead the zombies on foot into the park, where they would lose me and eventually disperse. I’d then circle back and meet the rest of my group at the subway.

The fire truck blocking my left turn made that plan a little difficult.
